I am the king!
Leah's good friend Isaac (4 yrs old) visited for a day on Friday, and left us this wonderful expressive chalk piece. A quote from the artist: "I am the king, I am the king, I am the king, I am the king, I am the king of avacados, pink and noodles!"
Beautifiul Tulips
Leah and Theresa created some tulips for our table in celebration of spring. Leah even painted the pollen inside them.

mail art start...
Michael Fikaris at www.silentarmy.com invited me to contribute to this mail art piece when i was over at his place a while ago. Artists so far also included Amy Lockhart, Marc Bell, and Anthony Woodward. I drew Michael's eyes and hat as he sat looking at me, drawing me in his sketchbook. This image is taken from his flikr account, which I suggest you go and check out. Just looking at the collections of graffiti, galleries and people, an unpretentious, pretty complete sense of outsider art emerges, or how art functions. Well, that's what i see, anyway. Michael's volunteered to be our guest editor for the next issue of dtm.

Blind Contour First Friday 1 -- Thank God I'm a country boy
Niff and Sutter's first 'Blind Contour First Friday'. It was moved from a weekly to a monthly format because it seemed too hard to keep up for many people. This month's installment has a theme: HOT. Above, I give you our stove with one pot, one griddle, and one frypan on top. Not exactly a subway drawing but as I get ready for work, believe me, I'm there in my mind. Therein lies the oatmeal.
About
The almost daily subway sketchbook began in December 2003 here at this link, with the idea it would be interesting to chart the drawing process from a beginner's standpoint. It was switched to Blogger in September 2005.
Dave Howard is the founder of the Toronto Comic Jam, he writes occasional freelance reviews, is the co-publisher & co-editor of DTM, and sketches people occasionally on the subways to and from work. He lives in downtown Toronto with his partner Theresa and daughter Leah.

Projects
Dave founded The Toronto Comic Jam in
November 1996 as a safe haven for the alternative comics community --
a place where artists could meet, exchange ideas, and find moral support,
using comics as a basis for social interaction. Inspired by Rupert Bottenberg's
comic jams in Montreal, regularly-held monthly comic jams in Toronto
have helped to build a sense of community and local history. About 50 people show up each month to draw comics together in a local artbar

Don't Touch Me Independent Comics
Dave began Don't Touch Me Comics in 1994 as an alt comics anthology where artists could show their work, and included a long interview with a professional. He published 7 issues sporadially until 2002, when local artist and teacher Dave Lapp offered to team up editorially and finanacially to help keep it going. They dropped the interview and have been able to publish regularly, every 4 months with high production values, continuing to give artists the space they need to grow.
